May 2004

I feel the relationship between two people of different generations is often overlooked because it is not showy or loud as romantic love is sometimes portrayed. Yet I have experienced in these relationships such a deep love full of mutual support, acceptance, selflessness, respect and sacrifice that I wanted to create a piece that celebrates and draws attention to these situations.

The two chairs sit with each other representing my great aunt sitting with my mother on her knee, seen here on the right. Each chair only has two legs and so cannot stand on its own, yet when they sit together, they are a strong unit, supporting each other. The character of each chair is shown in the design of the back, as the young maple chair features a short, contemporary, simple back of straight slats whereas the elder walnut chair features a taller, more traditional back of turned spindles.
